TEF Canada writing: format, scoring and strategy

2 tasks in 60 minutes, out of 450. You need 310 for NCLC 7 in this section alone — and every section is judged separately.

Three things that actually move this score

Section A is imitation, not invention

You are continuing a given text. Match its tense, register and tone. A brilliant paragraph in the wrong voice scores badly.

Section B rewards visible structure

Tout d'abord, de plus, cependant, en conclusion. Three different connectors is an easy, visible mark.

Learn the formal letter formulas by heart

Madame, Monsieur, and Je vous prie d'agréer… are fixed, expected, and free marks.

The mistake that costs most people marks

Going over the word range. Both sections have published ranges and exceeding them is penalised — write to the count, not until you run out of ideas.

Remember it is judged on its own

NCLC 7 must be met in writing separately from the other three skills — you cannot make up a weak writing score with a strong one elsewhere. If writing is your weakest section, it is the only section that currently matters.

All eight NCLC 7 thresholds are listed here.
