NCLC 7 in French: exactly what you need
NCLC 7 is the level that unlocks French points for Express Entry. It is eight different numbers depending on your exam and skill — here they all are.
The eight numbers

Each is a minimum for that skill on that scale. Note that even within one exam the thresholds differ — on TCF Canada you need 458 in listening but 453 in reading.
What NCLC 7 actually feels like
NCLC 7 is the French equivalent of CLB 7 and sits at roughly B2 — upper-intermediate. Not fluent, not effortless, but functional under pressure:
- Follow a conversation between two native speakers without them slowing down for you.
- Write a structured argument with a position, reasons and a conclusion.
- Hold your own in a discussion you have not rehearsed.
- Read an administrative letter and act on it correctly.
From no French at all this is commonly put at 600–900 hours. From a solid B1 it is closer to three to five months.
What it is worth
- 50 additional CRS points with NCLC 7 French and CLB 5 or higher English in all four abilities.
- 25 additional points with CLB 4 or lower English, or no English test.
- Eligibility for French-language category draws, whose cut-offs have repeatedly run well below general draws.
The third item usually matters more than the first two combined.
The rule that decides most applications
All four skills, separately. Never an average.
