TEF Canada reading: format, scoring and strategy

40 questions in 60 minutes, out of 300. You need 207 for NCLC 7 in this section alone — and every section is judged separately.

Three things that actually move this score

Budget the time before you start

Ninety seconds an item. Section C texts are long enough to swallow ten minutes if you read them properly, and reading them properly is not required.

Scan for the specific word the question names

Then read the two or three lines around it closely. That is the whole technique.

Learn the reformulation idioms deliberately

Loin d'être, faute de, quitte à, il s'en est fallu de peu. Section D marks are the cheapest in the paper once you know them.

The mistake that costs most people marks

Reading every text from start to finish. The paper is a time race, and comprehension of the whole document is never what is being asked.

Remember it is judged on its own

NCLC 7 must be met in reading separately from the other three skills — you cannot make up a weak reading score with a strong one elsewhere. If reading is your weakest section, it is the only section that currently matters.

All eight NCLC 7 thresholds are listed here.

How you practise reading here

Français Express includes TEF Canada reading at its real length and timing, as complete 40-question papers plus shorter 20-question sets for a weeknight, with an explanation for every answer including why the tempting wrong option is wrong. Your accuracy is tracked and compared against the NCLC 7 line, so you know whether this is the section holding you back.
