39 questions in 60 minutes, out of 699. You need 453 for NCLC 7 in this section alone — and every section is judged separately.
The format
39 items in 60 minutes — about 90 seconds each — on a rising difficulty curve. Short signs, messages and adverts early; administrative letters, articles and argued texts later.
There is no penalty for a wrong answer, so a blank is a guaranteed zero where a guess is a one-in-four chance.

Three things that actually move this score
Skim, scan, then read closely
Ten seconds to see what the document is, then find the word the question is about, then read only the two or three lines around it. Reading everything at one speed is why people run out of time.
Distrust the option that quotes the text exactly
Verbatim repetition is a favourite distractor. The correct answer more often paraphrases.
Answer every single question
There is no negative marking. Leaving items blank is the most common avoidable loss on this paper.
The mistake that costs most people marks
Spending five minutes on one hard item early in the paper. The items get harder as you go, so time stolen at the start is taken from questions that would have proved your level.
Remember it is judged on its own
NCLC 7 must be met in reading separately from the other three skills — you cannot make up a weak reading score with a strong one elsewhere. If reading is your weakest section, it is the only section that currently matters.
