The case for a smaller target

From no French, NCLC 7 is 600–900 hours away — 12 to 18 months at a realistic pace. Almost nobody sustains effort towards a goal that distant with no intermediate proof that it is working.

NCLC 4 is roughly a third of the journey and reachable in a few months. It is far enough to feel earned and near enough to actually reach.

NCLC 7 remains the goal. It simply should not be your next goal.

What NCLC 4 lets you do

What it does not give you: following two native speakers talking normally, or arguing a position. Those are the NCLC 7 skills, and they are a different order of difficulty.

Be clear about the third row. NCLC 4 earns you no CRS points. It is a training milestone, not an immigration one, and anyone implying otherwise is misleading you.

How to know you have reached it

You do not need to sit an official test to find out — that is an expensive way to check. In this app, finishing Stage 3 (Getting around) puts you in roughly the right territory: at that point you can directions, transport, appointments, and the present tense.

The honest check is behavioural rather than numerical: can you get through a real transaction in French without switching to English? If yes, you are around there.
